4 youths treated for possible hypothermia after falling through ice

Four juveniles, ages 11-14, were treated for possible hypothermia after falling through ice into the Big Wind River just south of Railroad Avenue late Saturday afternoon, the Fremont County Sheriff's Office reports. Deputies arrived in the area to find three of the four on the north bank while the other young man was stranded on the south bank; all were wet and very cold. A deputy was able to wade across a portion of the river to reach the stranded youth and kept him warm with blankets until a Wind River Police officer was able to access their location by vehicle. While all four juveniles were un-injured, they were all taken to SageWest - riverton for observation of hypothermia; they were later released. "We strongly recommend staying off all river ice regardless of the time of year, especially this time of the year," Undersheriff Ryan Lee said. "Ice may appear safe, however due to recent warm conditions it becomes rotted and unstable in places, creating very dangerous conditions." #county10 #news
