Kids Car seat check set for Friday in Riverton

(Riverton, Wyo.) - For folks with child car seats in their vehicle, a mid-winter car seat check will be held at the Fremont County EMS headquarters in Riverton on Friday. The ambulance station is just northeast of SageWest Hospital. The event was timed to coincide with the regional basketball tournament when lots of folks and their kids will be attending the game. Nationally certified Child Passenger Safety Technicians will perform inspection and train parents and caregivers to install and adjust their car seats properly. All Fremont County residents, including residents of the Wind River Indian Reservation, are welcomed assuring the safety of their younger children. “Essentially it is a one-on-one lesson in the correct use of your car seat. Having the event in the winter helps our members of the community to attend the event during the regional basketball tournament,” said Noel Cooper, Executive Director for Injury Prevention Resources. Motor vehicle crashes are the leading killer of children under 14. “It’s a parent’s (or driver’s) responsibility to make sure a child’s car seat is properly installed and adjusted. We’re here to show you how. A vehicle crash can be such a devastating event, not assuring you have done everything to keep your child safe can make it that much worse” said Cooper. Currently in Wyoming, approximately 86 percent of car seats are used incorrectly. Some of the mistakes may be minor, but some are serious enough to reduce the effectiveness of the car seat in the event of a crash. This Mid - Winter Car Seat Check Event is made possible by Safe Kids Worldwide, Wyoming Department of Transportation, Wind River Radio Network, SAGE WEST, Fremont County Ambulance and Injury Prevention Resources.
