Tigers on top following preliminary round at state swimming

(Gillette, Wyo.) - Lander fans were out in force at the Campbell County Aquatic Center for the 2016 3A Swim State Championships and the Tigers did not disappoint. At Preliminaries on Thursday qualified swimmers from 11 teams vied for top 12 placings to earn team points at Finals on Friday. Preliminaries started with the Diving elimination rounds narrowing the field of 17 swimmers to 16 after 5 dives and then to the top 12 who will complete the contest with 5 dives during finals. Noah Kreager is seeded 7th and Wyatt Womack 11th. *Fast Swims, Top Seeds* Swimming kicked off with the traditional "Anointing of the Water" by Tigers pouring Lander pool water into the Gillette pool in preparation for Tiger entry. With a slightly modified line-up, the Medley Relay team landed the Tigers first seed in a time drop that would mark the tone for the balance of Preliminaries. Freshman Caleb "I don't know what taper is going to feel like" Huelskamp took top seed in both the 200 & 500 Freestyle events dropping an astounding 10 &18 seconds respectively. Tigers will be 4 swimmers strong in the 200 and 2 in the 500 moving into Finals. Clearly the Tiger Taper was working across the squad, with the IM securing 3 Tigers in the top 6 with upwards of 14 second time drops to earn high seeds. Sprinters prevailed taking 1st, 3rd and 5th seeds in the 50 Free and 1st, 2nd 4th in the 100 Free, with Griffin Leemon top seed in both and only fractions from a 3A record breaking time. The excitement continued in the Fly with 2 Tigers in the top 6 and Kemmerer's Carl Krell within striking distance of the 3A record. *Gunning for Records* The 200 Free Relay Team took top seed with their eye on a 3A record breaking attempt in Finals. The 100 Back will have Tigers in 5th & 6th seed and the 100 Breast placed Ryan Crawford in top seed within less than a second from the LVHS school record. Closing out Preliminaries and rounding out top seed in all 3 relays, the 400 Free Relay team will march to the fastest lane and be the team to beat at Finals which begin this morning at 10 a.m. *--h/t to Mark and Judy Crawford* #county10 #news
