Lady Eagles Soar; Cougars tamed at State Basketball

(Casper, Wyo.) - The State Class 1A/2A Basketball Tournament in Casper crowned a Fremont County Team as State Champion and another was the state runner-up. County teams lost in the third and fifth place games. The first-time ever State Champion Lady Eagles of St. Stephens, before a decidedly pro-Eagle crowd, defeated Kaycee in the title game Saturday night 63-41 after dispatching Rock River in the quarterfinals (61-42) and Little Snake River in the semifinals (56-53). The Lady Eagles took the lead early and never looked back The defending State Champion Wind River Cougars Boys Team came up just short of repeating their title, falling to Pine Bluffs 56-50. It was the Hornets first state title in 33 years and was only the third appearance in the Championship game by Wind River. The Cougars won their quarterfinal games over Tongue River in the quarterfinals and topped Big Horn in the semis 66-54. The Lady Chiefs from Wyoming Indian High won thier first game at state over Burns 59-44, but fell to Southeast in the semi-finals, 50-45 with 31 of the Cyclones points coming from the free-throw line on 29 fouls called on the Lady Chiefs, including a Technical Foul late in the game with about three minutes left and Wyoming Indian leading by three. Southeast then scored six consecutive points after the alleged "uniform violation" to grab the momentum and the game before the Lady Chiefs had a chance to get the ball again. It was a game changer. In the third place game against Lyman, the Lady Eagles topped the Lady Chiefs 69-64 for a heartbreaking end to their tournament journey. The Wyoming Indian boys, playing without their top two scorers who had been suspended, lost to Big Horn 53-43, but the Chiefs bounced back to beat Tongue River 74-57 before losing to Big Piney in the Consolation Championship Game to Big Piney 54-45. *Feature Photo: The Lady Eagles began celebrating in the final seconds of their State Championship Victory Saturday night.
