Alleged drunken driver hits horse and rider, flees

A 60 year old Riverton man is facing several misdemeanor charges in connection with a hit and run incident that occurred Saturday evening in north Riverton. Otis Smith is alleged to have been operating a 1997 Chevrolet truck that struck a 37-year-old Riverton woman who was horseback on Honor Farm Road. The woman was taken by ambulance to Sagewest Riverton and treated for minor injuries before being released; the horse had to be euthanized by veterinarian after sustaining a broken leg. The victim and two friends were riding west on Honor Farm Road when they observed Smith's vehicle travelling at a high rate of speed on North Smith Road almost crashing at the intersection of Honor Farm Road. The witnesses state that Smith's vehicle then proceeded west towards their location on Honor Farm Road. "Two of the women were able to move to the south side of the roadway, however the third rider was struck from behind, causing her to fall from her horse and onto the truck's windshield; the horse was ran over and dragged by the vehicle," Undersheriff Ryan Lee said. Witnesses report that Smith's vehicle continued down the roadway with the victim on the hood of the truck, and dragging the horse for about 100 feet before stopping. The victim was able to get her horse from underneath the truck and that is when Smith is alleged to have fled the scene. A bystander followed Smith and observed him crash his truck again at the intersection of Delfelder Road and Highway 789 after missing the corner at that location and hitting a road sign and guide wire. Smith is alleged to have driven from that crash scene as well but was stopped by Law Enforcement a short distance away on Hutchison Road. Upon being questioned, Smith indicated he was intoxicated and that he was responsible for the collision on Honor Farm Road. Smith was arrested for Driving While under the Influence of Alcohol, Leaving the Scene of an Injury Crash, Driving under Suspension, and Failure to Maintain Auto Insurance. Smith's blood alcohol content is unknown as laboratory results are pending. #county10 #news
