Winter Storm Warning Posted; Major storm to hit tonight

(Riverton, Wyo.) - A Winter Storm Warning has been posted for the Wind River Basin tonight through Wednesday. The National Weather Service Forecast Office in Riverton said the storm will bring heavy wet snow and hazardous driving conditions at times to much of Central and Southwest Wyoming. The Winter storm warning is for the Wind River Mountains East, Upper Wind River Basin, Wind River Basin, Lander Foothills, Green Mountains and Rattlesnake Range and the communities of Dubois, Riverton, Shoshoni, Lander and Jeffrey City. The Winter Storm Warning is in effect from 6 p.m. tonight to 6 p.m. Wednesday. According to the NWS, there will areas of rain changing to snow this evening, then periods of snow, moderate to heavy at times, tonight through Wednesday afternoon. Snow amounts could be two to three feet on the east slopes of the Wind River Range, lower elevations can expect one to two feet. South Pass will become especially hazardous with 25 to 35 mph winds causing blowing and drifting snow. Expect near zero visibility at times in heavy snow.
