South Pass highway to open in 6 hours; Rawlins highway closed through tomorrow; Shoshoni to Casper now opening

(WYDOT / Pitchengine Communities) (Riverton, Wyo.) - Snowdrifts up to 7 feet tall have closed Wyoming 28 over South Pass. WYDOT currently has a front end loader working from the top of Red Canyon down the hill to remove the drifts as a rotary snowplow was not immediately available. Other equipment is expected to arrive this afternoon. Earliest estimates for the South Pass road to open is from 4-6 hours, if the wind doesn't come up again. The Shoshoni to Casper route, US 20/26, is being reopened at this hour. There was a 10 mile stretch of large snowdrifts that had to be cleared. "We didn't get the wind here, but they sure did from Moneta to Casper and north of Rawlins," said WYDOT District 5 spokesman Cody Beers. "We don't anticipate the Rawlins road reopening until sometime tomorrow." Meanwhile, an early morning mishap shortly after 1 a.m. disabled a WYDOT snow plow north of Riverton for much of the day when it's side plow dug into soft dirt and tore the plow from the side of the truck. Beers said the WYDOT vehicle was driven to Lander for temporary repairs, and then went back into service, minus the side plow. "Our crews have been out all day from very early this morning and they are working hard to get the roads clear and back open again," he said. "We ask motorists to be patient." #county10 #news
