What a difference 800 feet makes

While Wind River Range snow telemetry sites recorded a foot or more of new snow from Saturday through Tuesday noon, Riverton's airport had reported the most white stuff in the lower climes. Just 800 feet below the airport, in downtown Riverton, the snowfall only measured 2.9 inches. The elevation made a big difference. The airport's 6.7 inches just topped Atlantic City's 6.2 inches. The rural areas around Lander received from 2.1 to 2.9 inches, while in town the city only recorded a single inch of snowfall.
