RMS Band wins First Place at Utah Festival, again

(Zach Tolman / Pitchengine Communities) * (Riverton, Wyo.) - The Riverton Middle School 8th Grade Band captured first place at the Layton, Utah, Music in the Parks Festival this past weekend. [image: Inline image 2] *Kaila Heistuman, the band council president, with the trophy. * *(RMS / Pitchengine Communities)* RMS Director of Bands Zach Tolman explained what the Layton festival is all about: "Music in the Parks is an organization that hosts band festivals around the country near theme parks. So you get to perform and then go hang at an amusement park (Lagoon). This festival is different than festivals in Wyoming. In Wyoming, bands do not compete against each other. You are scored against the "perfect idea of a band" but not ranked at the end of the day. Music in the Parks festivals are competitions. Groups are placed into categories based on ensemble type (band, choir, orchestra), school type (high school, junior high, middle school) and then school size. That way you are competing against groups of comparable size to you. In the past 4 years, our 8th grade band has placed 1st three times."
