Wyoming writers converge on Riverton for annual conference

The 42nd Annual Wyoming Writers’ Conference was held from June 3rd to June 5th in Riverton at theWind River Hotel and Casino. It was a lively atmosphere where many writers from all over Wyoming, and a few from out of state showed up for an entertaining and eventful weekend. During the conference, agents and editors visited and writers got the opportunity to have pitch sessions with agents and publishers such as Elizabeth Wales, owner and principal agent at Wales Literary Agency in Seattle Washington, Louella Turner of High Hill Press, an independent publisher based out of Missouri, and Tiffany Schofield, the Acquisitions Editor of Five Star Publishing/Cengage Learning. A pitch session is a session in which an author presents an unpublished manuscript, or an idea for a book, to an agent or editor, and the agent or editor offers feedback on aspects such as sales, marketing, plot and storytelling and agrees to look at submissions. Saturday was the biggest day of the conference, with an early morning breakfast, breakout sessions in which writers were able to attend workshops on themes such as Nonfiction, Poetry, and the art of Self-Publishing. Authors could also sell their books on consignment at the Meadow Lark Bookstore, which is a locally owned bookstore. Saturday evening concluded with an open mic session. Various awards were also presented throughout the weekend. Sunday closed with a delicious breakfast and what is known as a Paddle Panel, in which judges read aloud portions of anonymously submitted manuscripts and judged whether or not as an agent or publisher they would want to continue reading the work. The Wyoming Writer’s Conference is a great place to make new connections, meet local authors and writers who share a passion for storytelling, and also learn the ropes of the publishing industry. It is held every week on the first weekend in June. The next Wyoming Writer’s Conference will be held the first weekend in June 2017, with the location to be announced at a later date.
