Rodeo, Quick Draw & Paints: Art Event to Benefits Arts & Rodeo

Wyoming’s Wind River Country is at once a ranching community and a hub of artistic skill, a vast stretch of Wyoming landscapes and a close-knit county. Community calendars in turn list rodeos and art events any given week. July 2 will bring both together. The Lander Old Timer’s Rodeo Association and Lander Art Center are joining forces to host a quick draw and live art auction. Starting at 5:30 p.m. at the Museum of the American West, regional artists will paint and sculpt for 90 minutes while spectators watch, then the framed results will be auctioned off at 7 p.m. Many of the community members involved in putting together the Lander Pioneer Days Rodeos July 3 and 4 are also artists, and the close-knit community saw an opportunity to band together. Sixty percent of proceeds will go to the artists, and the remaining 40 percent will be split between the Lander Old Timer’s Rodeo Association and the Lander Art Center. “Fremont County has a great art community,” said Stacy Stebner, Lander Art Center director. Between Lander Art Center board members and recognized painters, the participating artists will showcase the talent and community of Wind River Country. “There will be 10-plus artists creating live, which is pretty phenomenal,” Stebner pointed out. “It’s an opportunity to see something that, unless you yourself are an artist, you wouldn’t get to see.” Instead of walking into a gallery and observing completed pieces of art, viewers get to be part of the process—watching where an artist begins, how he or she proceeds, and witnessing the finishing touches to the work. “It’s also an incredible opportunity to purchase a piece,” said Stebner. “Some of these artists show in Jackson galleries, selling an 8x10 for $2,000. At an auction like this you may get really high-end artwork at a reasonable price—I’m hoping to get a piece myself!” Bidders will arrive at this event with an appreciation for art and leave with a new understanding of its process, and maybe a masterpiece under your arm—though you may have to wrangle with Stebner if you share a favorite piece! *Don’t forget to use the hashtag #windrivercountry when you share your Wind River Country memories on social media.
