Update: An Explanation of Attendance Boundary Changes to Gillette Schools

(Gillette, Wyo.) After district-wide changes to attendance areas were made last week following a school board meeting, a lot of parents were confused as to where their student would be attending in the upcoming school years. Some teenagers will just be entering their senior year and would like to stay with the high school they've attended for their entire career, for instance. To clear up the confusion, here's a list of some of the additional items that were discussed and approved at that school board meeting: - Incoming* 5th and 6th graders* at *Prairie Wind Elementary* can choose whether they would like to attend the new Stocktrail Elementary for 2016-2017, or remain at Prairie Wind Elementary. - Incoming *seniors in 2017-18*, when Thunder Basin is projected to be finished, can choose their high school of attendance. The process for that choice and perhaps some limitations will be discussed at a later date. - Incoming *juniors for the 2017-2018 school year* can also choose their high school of attendance. - Incoming *freshman and sophomores in 2017-2018* will have to attend the high school assigned to them by the new attendance boundaries. As an exception, freshman and sophomores in 2017-18, *whose attendance boundaries have been changed*, will be allowed to choose their high school without going through the AACR process. The AACR process may provide flexibility to those whose boundaries were not changed. - Incoming *7th graders* will have to attend their assigned junior high school starting in 2016-2017. The AACR process may provide flexibility. - Incoming *8th and 9th graders in 2016-2017* can remain at their current junior high if their residence was assigned to the other junior high school. - *Siblings of an incoming 8th or 9th grade student entering the 7th grade in 2016-2017* will be allowed to attend the same junior high school as their older brother or sister. - *Rozet Elementary students* can choose (for the 2016-2017 school year) whether to attend Twin Spruce Junior High or Sage Valley Junior high. After that they must attend their assigned school, Twin Spruce. #county17 #news -- *Brenda Kirk* Community Maven for County17.com brenda@pitchengine.com | 614.940.7121 Twitter | Instagram | Facebook PitchEngine™ | *Connecting Communities*http://pitchengine.com | Twitter | Facebook
