Highway Chase Reaches Speeds of 130mph; Leads to arrest of teenager

(Gillette, Wyo.) At around 11:30 pm Sunday night, Trooper Colton Lenz out of Sundance was sitting at his usual post on Interstate 90 when he heard a car speeding by and clocked it going 98 miles per hour. The vehicle was being driven by a 16 year old boy, with an instructor permit out of South Dakota. His alleged stepbrother, 19 year old Michael Chase, was in the passenger seat. As soon as the boys saw a state trooper behind them, they sped off. Lenz radared the car a few miles later as going 126 miles per hour. That's when he notified dispatch that a high speed pursuit was underway. For almost fifty miles, the pair ran cars off the road, including a horse trailer that had to exit on to the shoulder in order to avoid being hit. No other cars collided with the suspects, but all the way to the Campbell County line the chase continued. Campbell County Sheriff's deputies, notified that a high speed pursuit was passing through, put out spike strips for the teenagers. Trooper Lenz backed off the car so he wouldn't also get tangled in the spikes, and that's when the boys turned off all the lights on their car, in order to get away. Instead they hit the spike strips full on, blowing out all four tires. Yet they continued down I-90 at speeds of 111 miles per hour, until the 16 year old finally lost control of the car and spun out in the median. "The collaboration between the Campbell County Sheriff's Office and Highway Patrol was great," Lenz said. "They made it possible to stop this chase before it reached the city." Law enforcement found a prescription bottle of marijuana in the car, as well as several pipes. The 16 year old claimed possession of all the paraphernalia, and has been arrested for speeding, reckless driving, eluding police, and possession of a controlled substance. Chase, the 19 year old passenger, was arrested for aiding in a crime. #county17 #news -- *Brenda Kirk* Community Maven for | 614.940.7121 Twitter | Instagram | Facebook PitchEngine™ | *Connecting Communities* | Twitter | Facebook
