Wyoming Coaches Association Names Local Athlete as Award Winner

(Wyoming) The family of Bob Carey is please to announce the 2016 winners of the Bob Carey Memorial Award. For those of you who did not receive the opportunity to meet Mr. Carey, he was the only coach in Wyoming to have won both a boys’ and girls’ State championship in basketball. Bob Carey was a long-time Lander High School coach that believed in excellence and in equality for all athletes. He cared deeply for all of his students and encouraged them to excel in all areas of endeavors. He was also instrumental in starting girls’ basketball in the state of Wyoming. Bob Carey died of lung cancer in February of 1995, leaving a legacy of distinction for athletes in Wyoming. The Carey Award was instituted in 1996 in honor of coach Carey. This award is given to senior basketball players only. It seeks to honor the outstanding girls’ basketball player in the state of Wyoming that demonstrates leadership ability, scholarship, character, athletic ability, and community involvement. In Division 1A/2A, the 2016 winner is Lexie Dockery of Niobrara County High School In Division 3A/4A, the 2016 winner is Hannah Cass of Newcastle High School. The winners will receive a plaque, and their names will appear on a plaque located in the Bob Carey Memorial Fieldhouse in Lander. Congratulations ladies! #county17 #news
