Grass Fire Still Burning North of Town

(Gillette, Wyo.) Saturday night, fire crews got a call that there was a grass fire on Highway 59, about 12 miles north of downtown Gillette. When they arrived on scene, they had trouble accessing the fire, and had to find a way in from the 60 Bar Ranch. The location of the fire and type of terrain in that part of the county continues to make it difficult for firefighters to access. Dry conditions from the winter and high temperatures with very little moisture over the weekend have also complicated fighting the fire. By Sunday morning, CCFD had help from several other agencies: the Bureau of Land Management, Campbell County Road and Bridge, Weston County, Johnson County, Fremont County, Natrona County, and Wyoming State Forestry. CCFD's Maintenance Department have kept trucks running throughout the effort. This morning a type III helicopter and a 20 person hand crew from Colorado will be joining the crews already on scene. Twenty-five firefighters with 15 vehicles have been battling the wildfire now for two days. It's estimated to be 525 acres in size, and as of this morning is 60% contained. We spoke with Captain J.R. Fox to ask him how much longer he thinks it will take to put out. He estimates that if the weather cooperates today, and the wind doesn't pick up, they will have it out by tonight. The cause of the fire is still under investigation. *Photo h/t Campbell County Fire Department // Pitchengine Communities* #county17 #news
