New Rockpile Museum Construction Has Been Put on Hold

(Gillette, Wyo.) The Campbell County Board of Commissioners are meeting currently to discuss why the project to build a bigger building to house the Rockpile Museum will not go forward as planned. Renues are down at least 20% this year in taxes, and there is going to be an estimated billion dollar shortfall in the budget. In light of this, starting construction on a new community facility seems unfeasible. At a prior museum board meeting last month, the commissioners expressed the opinion that it might be "in poor taste" to go forward as planned. In light of recent layoffs, it seems even more of a bad choice today. "I can't look everyone in the face and say that we are reducing costs in the county, but we're going to build this museum and we need more staff to operate it," said Commissioner Micky Shober. "It doesn't set well." The project has been in the planning stages for several years. There has been money fundraised and also set aside by the county for the new facility. "Some years you're sittin' in high cotton, and some years you're wondering how the hell you're going to stay afloat," said Commissioner Rusty Bell, comparing the county's financial situation to his years working in Agriculture. "We have to take precautions and slow things down right now." #county17 #news
