Juvenile Leads Law Enforcement on High Speed Chase

(Gillette, Wyo.) Around 8 p.m. Tuesday night, Gillette Police took a report that a Dodge Ram pickup truck had backed in to an unoccupied Buick Park Avenue on Alison Avenue. The driver fled the scene without contacting the owner of the Buick. While investigating, police discovered the Ram was being driven by a 12 year old boy. They attempted to stop him at Walnut and Dogwood but the boy sped away from officers. Officers deactivated their lights and sirens and tried to follow him from a safe distance, considering his age. According to preliminary reports, the 12 year old continued to drive the truck in a reckless manner, disregarding traffic signals on Lakeway, and hitting a 21 year old man in a Ford F-150 truck in the process. That happened around 8:45 p.m. The Ram eventually went over a curb and struck a tree in the front yard of a home on Dogwood Avenue before rolling over. The 12 year old attempted to flee the scene on foot but was caught by law enforcement. He had injuries to his head and wrist and was taken to Campbell County Memorial Hospital. The driver of the Ford F-150 reported injuries to his leg. He was ticketed for not having proper proof of insurance. The 12 year old reportedly told officers he was suicidal. They cited him for two counts of hit and run (one with injuries), reckless driving, eluding, not having a driver's license, and interference with an officer. Damages in the crash exceed $35,000. Due to his age, the boy's name is not being released. It was unknown at press time if his parents had been contacted.
