Warmer and drier over the holiday weekend

(Gillette, Wyo.) The National Weather Service out of Rapid City, South Dakota is warning that the weekend will see increasing chances of daily showers and thunderstorms, due to an active weather pattern over the Northeast Wyoming / Black Hills area. Temperatures will begin to increase Saturday, with highs expected in the mid 80s through Sunday, and in the 90s on Monday and Tuesday. So far no rain predicted for the 4th, however. Extreme drought conditions expanded from Rapid City through Spearfish and down southwestern Crook County in to Weston County this week. Most of the Black Hills area in to Campbell County experienced heat and dryness that intensified the drought effect. Our region saw rainfall that was 60% less than normal. NWS is predicting La Niña conditions for the rest of this summer -- higher temperatures and lower precipitation -- with occasional thunderstorms full of lightning and hail complicating the already extremely dry rangeland situation, increasing chances of wildfires. #county17 #news
