BNSF Accidentally Starts Several Fires During Track Maintenance

(Gillette, Wyo.) Wednesday, July 13th, Campbell County Fire responded to Echeta Road for the report of a fire along the railroad tracks. BNSF employees who were using grinders while performing track maintenance ignited a grass fire that was contained to just over three acres. Tuesday morning at 4:22 a.m. on Highway 51, near Gray Road, and again at 8:30 a.m. in the same area, BNSF employees using grinders on that stretch of track ignited some of the older railroad tires along the tracks. CCFD crews responded to the area both times to help extinguish those fires, as well. Campbell County Fire Chief Bill Shank says the maintenance is routine and small fires like this happen every year. The Campbell County Fire Department has responded to 927 total calls for service so far this year. The county, as well as most of Eastern Wyoming, is under a fire ban due to extremely dry, hot, and windy conditions this summer. #county17 #news
