Local Law Enforcement Stop Part of Nationwide Fraud Ring

(Gillette, Wyo.) Javiar Coley, 18, of Flint, Michigan was arrested July 10th at the Gillette Wal-Mart after trying to transfer money between Visa gift cards. Gillette Police had been informed Sunday that "a woman with purple hair" had tried to complete a similar gift card transaction, but was denied by the store. Staff contacted police after they recognized that the woman was "a scam artist" who had reportedly also recently stolen money from the Wal-Mart in Spearfish in the same way. She was not present when officers arrived, but Coley was, and was detained by officers after trying to make a similar gift card purchase. Video footage reviewed later from Wal-Mart stores in Pierre, Mitchell, Huron, Rapid City, and Spearfish South Dakota showed two men, including Coley, and two women all attempting to collaborate in defrauding Wal-Mart out of multiple $500 gift cards. Similar cases are being investigated by Wal-Mart in states stretching from Wyoming to Michigan. In all cases, at least one of the four was able to obtain money on a gift card fraudulently. According to court documents, Coley admitted to being a participant and explained how the scam worked to police. When arrested, Coley was in possession of 7 Wal-Mart gift cards. While incarcerated in Campbell County, Lawrence County South Dakota issued an arrest warrant for Coley for Grand Theft, a felony. In Campbell County he is being charged with two counts of obtaining goods by false pretenses, also felonies, with a possible 6 month prison sentence, if convicted. #county17 #news
