Dr. Pete Simpson to teach political science class at Sheridan College

(Sheridan, Wyo.) — Retired historian and former Wyoming politician, Dr. Pete Simpson, will return to Sheridan College during the Spring 2016 Semester to teach a two-credit political science course titled “Wyoming’s Political Identity.” The course is designed to explore the political culture of Wyoming with an eye to discovering what might be special or unique about the political behavior of Wyoming citizens, according to Mercedes Aguirre Batty, Dean of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences. The seven-week class will meet Monday-Thursday from Noon-12:55 p.m. and will begin Jan. 19, 2016. “Pete has a long affiliation with Sheridan College, and we’re pleased and excited to welcome him back to our campus,” said Sheridan College President Dr. Paul Young. The course will count as an elective for degree-seeking students, but everyone is invited to sign up for the class. Simpson has extended invitations to several guest-speakers including Beth Loffreda, author of "Losing Matt Shepard"; Scotty Ratliff, Shoshone Tribesman and former State legislator; Jeremy Johnston, Curator of the Buffalo Bill Museum; former Wyoming Governors Jim Geringer and Dave Freudenthal; and former US Senator Alan Simpson. A native of Cody, Dr. Simpson worked as a dean at Sheridan College in the early 1980s and held multiple positions at the University of Wyoming, including executive director of the UW Foundation. He received the Medallion Service Award from UW in 2011 for his “outstanding service and dedication to the university,” according to UW. Simpson was a member of the Wyoming House of Representatives from 1981-1984.
