(Sheridan, Wyo.) — In November 1919, President Wilson proclaimed November 11 as the first commemoration of Armistice Day
with the following words:
"To us in America, the reflections of Armistice Day will be filled with
solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country’s service and
with gratitude for the victory, both because of the thing from which it has
freed us and because of the opportunity it has given America to show her
sympathy with peace and justice in the councils of the nations … "

Today, the Sheridan community will mark the day with a number of events.
*VA’s Community Veterans Day Ceremony, 11 a.m. *
The public is invited and encouraged to attend the annual community
Veterans Day ceremony on the VA Medical Center campus as the VA honors all

*VFW Open House for Veterans Day, 12-8 p.m.*
Sheridan’s VFW Post 1560 will host a special open house in recognition of
all veterans of foreign wars, and will displays military items. Free
homemade chili, hot dogs, hamburgers and a cash bar. Open to all. For more

*“War Voices” (POW Stories) from 1-2 p.m. at the Sheridan Senior Center*
Val Burgess, noted local historian on WWII POWs, shares POW stories from
both the European and Pacific theaters of operation. Her stories will
connect the audience with the difficulties the men faced and the history of
their participation as prisoners of war. Free and open to all. For more

*Veteran’s Day assembly at 2:30 p.m.** in the Tongue River Middle School
Students from TRHS and TRMS will be in attendance, as they write letters to
veterans and invite them to the event. Organized by Pete Kilbride and

Ceremony in recognition of Veterans Day, featuring an address by Major
General Luke Reiner of the Wyoming Army National Guard. Open to all. For
