(Sheridan, Wyo.) — Every year, world-famous local author Craig Johnson gives his faithful fans a Christmas gift: a free short story. Sent out through his "Post-Its" newsletter available on his website
, Johnson said the idea for giving
readers a gift on Christmas Eve struck him several years ago.
The response that first year was great, he told a crowd at a reading at the
Sheridan County Fulmer Library branch today. And he realized he had started
something he couldn't stop when people began asking when he would send out
his next Christmas story the following year.
These days, he collects ideas all year long for his holiday stories.
"It's become a tradition now — every year, I write one of these down,"
Johnson said modestly.
A collection of these stories was published this year as "Wait for Signs,"
which made it onto the New York Times bestseller list.
Today, Johnson read his 2015 Christmas short story, "Land of the Blind," to
a packed audience at the library.
Johnson will also give readings tonight at the Ucross Christmas Celebration
and at the Clearmont Branch Library
at 5 p.m. Thursday.
