New services and name for NWCCD adult basic education program

(Sheridan, Wyo.) — Now under the name of “Center for College and Career Readiness,” the Northern Wyoming Community College District is assisting adults in researching career interests in the pursuit of a pathway for successful college entry. Formerly known as the Adult Basic Education Program, the Center is expanding its scope past high school equivalency and English language skills to focus on the primary goal of preparing adults for college and career readiness. With these changes comes the adoption of the “Start Smart Course” to improve the Center’s enrollment process. Adults interested in enrolling in the program, starting in January 2016, will enter through this course, which meets for 5 days, twice per semester (spring and fall). The Course will screen for key breakdowns in learning that result from challenges in vision and hearing, visual stress, attention and information processing. These screenings are designed to uncover how a person can most effectively learn and manage workplace situations by providing tools for identifying the underlying barriers to education and employment success. “We hope to empower adults to improve their workforce skills so they can obtain employment, receive a promotion at their jobs, and enter college,” said Sarah Riehn, Center for College and Career Readiness Director. Program enrollees will receive strategies and resources to use to help them learn better and to use at work to share with their employers or instructors at college, or vocational school, when they pursue this academic path. Participants will also create a profile on “Wyoming at Work” to discover their career interests and work values and develop skills towards successful career employment.“Our goal is to help prepare adults for life after obtaining their High School Equivalency Certificate and learning the English language, so they can get the education they need to pursue their dreams,” said Riehn. The Sheridan spring 2016 Start Smart Course dates are Jan. 11-15 and March 7-11, from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. at the Student Success Center, Room 110 in the Sheridan College Griffith Memorial Building.
