Local authors pen "Pack Trips with Howard Eaton"

(Sheridan, Wyo.) — Local authors Mary Dailey, Elizabeth Mason and Judy Slack, with assistance from the Eaton family, have recently published the new book “Pack Trips with Howard Eaton”. In November 2014, Mason and her husband Kevin attended an art opening at Sagebrush Gallery. One of the photographs, an image of Two Guns White Calf, taken in 1919 by a photographer named Pete Dailey caught Kevin’s eye. A woman, introducing herself as Mary Dailey, approached him offering to answer any questions he had. He noted that Elizabeth owned a photograph of this same chief standing next to her great grandmother and that it was also Dailey explained that her father had taken his photo during a trip to Glacier and Yellowstone National Park while working as a helper with the Eatons’. At once, Kevin called Elizabeth to come upstairs to share his discovery and meet Dailey. The two soon learned that Dailey’s father and Mason’s great grandmother Mary Dick had spent the summer of 1919 traveling as part of the Eatons’ Ranch trip and had undoubtedly interacted with one another from time to time. Mason and Dailey decided to collaborate on a book that would show what it was like to be part of the Eatons’ experience 1919. This unique story is told using Pete Dailey’s journal, Mary Dick’s letters, Howard Eaton’s letters and brochures, photographs and other supplemental paperwork found in the library. Cost of the book is $40 (plus tax) and proceeds from sales will benefit The Wyoming Room. Books are available for purchase at Sheridan Fulmer Library, King’s Saddlery and The Business Center. The authors will be available for book signings on Wednesday, Dec. 23 from 10 to 11 a.m. at The Business Center at 619 Broadway Street and Thursday, Dec. 24 from 10 to 11 a.m. at Designing Dinners at 615 Broadway Street. *Feature photo: A 1920s postcard of Eatons' ranch also promoted the Burlington Railroad as a way to get there.
