You deserve a donut at the Hootin' Owl Cafe

(Ranchester, Wyo.) — You deserve a donut — and at the Hootin' Owl Cafe in Ranchester, population 855, you can get fresh, homemade donuts of all varieties. Owner Jenny Miller opened her restaurant in September in a location that had been vacant for 15 years. In the short months since, her donut business has exploded. *Hootin' Owl Owner Jenny Miller. / Pitchengine Communities* "We have people that are coming from Gillette, Buffalo, Kaycee ... they have heard from people how great our fresh donuts are," Miller said. "Sure, you can get one from a convenience store, but fresh food has gone away. To bring something like that back to the community has really been nice, and our community is very supportive." *Christmas donuts from the Hootin' Owl Cafe. / Pitchengine Communties* Miller also serves home-cooked meals, from hand-dipped corndogs to fried chicken, breakfast burritos, burgers and fries to specialty coffees and ice cream. Her location on Dayton Street/Hwy 14 through the heart of town stood empty for over a decade. Miller is a South Carolina native who has lived in Ranchester for seven years. "My husband and I kept driving by and thinking, 'You know, it would be nice to have a little bakery, a family-style restaurant there.' ... I was joking with him about doing a couple dozen donuts, and from there, it has grown way bigger than that," Miller said. "I don't know who likes the donuts more — the kids or the adults," she joked. The food — and restaurant itself — is named after local legends. Miller's late father-in-law, Rich Miller of Sheridan, was called Hootin' Owl. His friends bore nicknames like Loose Lips, which is the name of the pulled pork sandwich at Hootin' Owl, and Crooked Foot, now a chicken sandwich at the cafe. *Rich Miller, aka "Hootin' Owl", center, with his friends. h/t Jenny Miller / Pitchengine Communities* The Hootin' Owl is open Monday-Saturday from 5 a.m.-8 p.m. and from 8 a.m.-7 p.m. Sunday.
