Mountain Snowpack low for First Week of January

(Wyoming) — The snowpack in the Bighorn Basin and Tongue River is below the median for the first week in January, according to the Natural Resources Conservation Service in Casper. The latest snow water equivalent report showed the Tongue River at the lowest in the state, 48 percent of the median, compared with 50 percent both one and two years ago. The Bighorns were pegged at 61 percent of the median, compared with 62 percent one year ago and 59 percent two years ago this week. Statewide, the snowpack was at 81 percent of the median compared with 103 percent on year ago. "Our SWE numbers are not good for this time of the year," reported Lee Hackleman, a water supply specialist for the NRCS. "However we still have plenty of time to make this deficit up, but this next week does not look too good."
