24-year-old Ascherin, sentenced in November in Sheridan, dies in prison

(Cheyenne, Wyo.) — Alex Richard Ascherin, a Wyoming inmate, died Friday, Feb. 5, 2016, at the Wyoming State Penitentiary in Rawlins, Wyoming from an alleged suicide, according to the Wyoming Department of Corrections. The incident is under investigation by the Wyoming Department of Corrections in conjunction with the Carbon County Sheriff’s Office and Carbon County Coroner. Ascherin was sentenced on Nov. 19, 2015, by Sheridan County District Court Judge John G. Fenn to 3-5 years for strangulation of a household member. He was serving a concurrent 3-5 year sentence out of Natrona County for possession of a controlled substance. Ascherin was born on Dec. 2, 1991, in Tyndall, South Dakota.
