Founded in 2010, the Food Group seeks to provide food security for the
children in Sheridan County.
"Food insecurity has become a national and local issue. In Sheridan School
District 2, approximately 36% (depending on the month) of children are on
free and reduced lunch programs. Though often hidden from their peers and
other community members, teachers are very aware that many children are
relying heavily on the food they receive during school. Teachers report
frequent instances where children dread the weekend because there is not
enough food in the house," The Food Group says.
The Food Group provides healthy weekend meals for students. This program is
anonymous, open to any child and provided at no cost. The Food Group
operates as a program of the Sheridan College Foundation, a local
non-profit 501(c)3 organization.
