Follow the tracks: BNSF changes mirror those in the coal industry

(Sheridan, Wyo.) — For over a century, Northeastern Wyoming has served as a coal and railway hub for the Western United States. Yet all of Wyoming has been watching as turmoil in the industry has resulted in recent job loss. Dally received confirmation today that BNSF changes are coming to Sheridan. Dally has also obtained a copy of the following letter, which suggests the forthcoming change in BNSF railway service through Sheridan County includes a proposal to begin intradivisional district service between Gillette and Laurel, Montana. What that means for the Sheridan stop remains to be seen. But the run from Gillette to Laurel is approximately 260 miles, and passes through Sheridan. See Dally's previous coverage of the BNSF's official comment on the possible closure of operation in Sheridan . BNSF is currently the seventh-largest employer in Sheridan County, according to the Sheridan County Chamber of Commerce. Last week, Pitchengine Communities shared the news that Cloud Peak Energy may do cuts through attrition at the Spring Creek Mine. We also shared the news that Peabody implemented what the international corporation called "a small number of job reductions " at its Caballo and Rawhide mines. As shown in the following map, the BNSF railroad travels through Gillette, Sheridan and into Laurel, MT, but on its way makes stops at Peabody's Caballo mine and Cloud Peak's Spring Creek mine, among others.
