(Sheridan, Wyo.) — Sheridan Police Department Detective Jerome Smith has been honored as Law Enforcement Officer of the Year for 2015-2016 by the Sheridan Elks Lodge #520. Prior to his service with the Sheridan Police Department, Detective Smith was a detention deputy for 11 years with the Sheridan County Sheriff’s Office. The award citation reads as follows: In 2015, Detective Smith had the opportunity to put his dedication to work on two (2) high profile cases. Detective Smith was instrumental in the investigation of the Sheridan County Attorney’s Office arson that occurred in June of 2014. The investigation carried into 2015, where a suspect was arrested and convicted of the arson. Detective Smith testified in Federal Court as part of the investigation and received a letter from Christopher A. Crofts, United States Attorney for the District of Wyoming, complimenting Detective Smith on his preparation and testimony during the trial, calling it “nothing short of exemplary." Mr. Crofts also stated that Detective Smith was, “an invaluable resource during the investigation." In the summer of 2015, Detective Smith became involved in another high-profile case, this involving the embezzlement of over $80,000 from a local business as well as a local non-profit organization . This investigation required hundreds of hours of investigation, interviews and report compilation. The case was prosecuted at the Federal level. Detective Smith’s thorough investigation caused the defendant to plead guilty, rather than risk trial, all due to the diligence in which Detective Smith assembled his case. FBI Special Agent Taylor Reed contacted Lt. Koltiska to personally commend Detective Smith on the quality of his investigation. SA Reed stated that he, as well as Federal Prosecutors and legal assistants, all credited Detective Smith’s skill and determination with the positive resolution of the case. *Feature photo: Mike Hamilton, Elks Lodge member, Detective Smith and Bill Dahlin, Elks Lodge #520Exalted Ruler. h/t Sheridan Police Department /
