But how did the King Ropes hat become THE King Ropes hat? Well, when asked,
Ryan King himself laughs and says he doesn't know.
"I honestly—I don't understand it myself," Ryan King, grandson of Don King,
The King family noticed the hat as far back as the 1980s-classic "Vacation"
National Lampoon movie. And then in the 1990s, Johnny Depp started wearing
his own King Ropes hat on the set of "Dead Man."
"He was in the cover of—I think it was *Newsweek*, some magazine, wearing
one of our brown, foam King Ropes hats," Ryan said.
In a departure true of any great tale, Ryan King takes a detour in the
telling of the King Ropes hat saga to interject that he, too, has a story
"I worked in private yachts for awhile ... I was based out of Florida, but
I was in the Bahamas, the Caribbean, the Mediterranean, all over," Ryan
said. "Johnny Depp had charted a boat that I was on and he noticed my hat—I
was wearing a King Ropes hat. After that trip, I had sent him a bunch of

Every season, hat designers come out with new styles. King's Saddlery keeps

Ryan laughs again when asked if maybe the name King, with its strong
presence and royal feel, makes the hats even more popular.
"Possibly," he says with a smile, unable—or unwilling—to divulge the magic
that is the King Ropes hat.
