Farmington Hills child benefits from ‘Care for Kids’ Radiothon

A Farmington Hills boy born prematurely will be among those who benefit from the WDVD-FM Cares for Kids Radiothon, which raises funds November 17 for sick and injured kids treated at Beaumont Children’s Hospital.

The Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals’ event will broadcast live from the South Tower Concourse of Beaumont Hospital, Royal Oak from 6 a.m. until 7 p.m.

Conner, age 9, was born 17 weeks premature and spent four months in the Beaumont Hospital, Royal Oak Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. At birth, he was diagnosed with an interventricular hemorrhage and had to undergo several surgeries on his heart, abdomen and eyes. His parents were told that he would probably never walk or talk. At two years old, as a result of his IVH and premature birth, Conner was diagnosed with hypotonic cerebral palsy.

For the past eight years, Conner has participated in occupational, physical and speech therapy at Beaumont, and today, he walks and talks and has made tremendous progress. His favorite group therapy activities include dancing, swimming, handwriting and the game “Eye Spy,” to help improve his vision.

During his early childhood, Conner was enrolled for two years in the RE/MAX Communication Preschool Program, to help with speech and language development, work that has significantly improved his stutter. Part of Beaumont Children’s Hospital, the program offers scholarships as well as subsidized classes in areas such as handwriting and swimming, thanks to funding from the Children’s Miracle Network.

Today, Conner loves riding his bike, which he received as a gift through Beaumont’s annual Bike Day, which provides customized bikes for children with physical challenges. Conner’s adaptive bike was built specifically for him and customized for his needs, thanks to funds raised through the Beaumont Children’s Hospital Miracle Classic.
