Zach Heck to Speak at the 27th Annual Program in Law and Technology Seminar
Zach Heck is a featured speaker for the University of Dayton School of Law's annual seminar on June 9, 2017. The seminar, titled, Exploring the Future of Cyber, Technology and Intellectual Property Innovation, begins at 8 a.m. at the University of Dayton School of Law, Joseph E. Keller Hall, 300 College Park in Dayton, Ohio.
Zach is presenting on biometrics and privacy impact assessments. This interactive session will explore how companies and researchers are using biometric identification to enhance cybersecurity protocol, while also weighing the benefits and risks. Zach will provide practical examples of data governance considerations when assessing and mitigating the risk factor of storing biometric data, and explain how bringing privacy counsel in early to create a privacy impact assessment can help identify corporate risk and potential liability before a single lawsuit or investigation is filed.
Biometrics is the use of human attributes signature to an individual to serve as a unique identifier to acquire access to date. The facial recognition, retinal scanners, palm-print and finger-print innovations that, just years ago were a staple of science fiction, have now become the latest features for credit card applications and mobile devices. However, emerging technology also brings with it new vulnerabilities that businesses and industries must take the time to understand.
Biometric data, once digitized, is like any other type of data, and therefore susceptible to unauthorized acquisition or duplication. The more reliant we become on biometric technology for security, the more susceptible we become to long-term vulnerabilities should our signature human attributes fall into the wrong hands with the ability to manipulate those identifiers. Changing your password or login credential after a hack is relatively easy; but changing your fingerprint or retina can be a little more difficult.
