Center for Media Justice Announces Identity Shift, Now Known as MediaJustice

OAKLAND, CA – The Center for Media Justice announced today that it will now be known as MediaJustice, effective July 1st, 2019. This identity change is part of a larger shift for the national non-profit, which is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year by intentionally renewing its commitment to winning economic, racial, and gender justice in a digital age. The Media Action Grassroots Network, the organization’s signature project and a national network of more than 100 social justice organizations, will now be known as the MediaJustice Network.
The past decade of victories won by MediaJustice, which formed out of Oakland's Youth Media Council in 2009, is highlighted in a new exhibit at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts (YBCA) in San Francisco, which documents the history of recent Bay Area youth organizing—as part of a larger retrospective of the artist Suzanne Lacy’s career. The exhibit, Suzanne Lacy: We Are Here, is open through August 2019 at the YBCA.

We helped not only win victories that changed the lives of real people through campaigns like the Campaign for Prison Phone Justice — we helped establish a new sector, supported dozens of organizations, and redistributed millions of dollars to small, grassroots groups. Over the next 10 years I know MediaJustice and our allies will build on the victories of the past decade to expand digital rights and ensure fair media representation for communities of color. Whether it’s securing Net Neutrality, establishing a new era in civil rights accountability for big tech, or persisting in dismantling high-tech profiling, policing, and punishment — MediaJustice will be there,” said Malkia Cyril, co-founder and executive director of the non-profit. “Today’s announcement represents a strategic focusing of our work on the communities and issues that matter most today. I look forward to continuing to help further our investment in the growing movement for digital rights which we helped create over the last 10 years, while passing the torch to a new generation of leaders.”
Since 2009, MediaJustice and the MediaJustice Network have built power in low-income communities of color by fighting for communication rights alongside grassroots organizers. From advocating for a free and open Internet as an issue of racial justice to curtailing police surveillance of Black activists on social media, the MediaJustice movement has had significant victories in working towards future in which every community is connected, represented, and free.
“Amidst a moment of increasing white nationalism, we can’t afford to ignore the new frontiers of discrimination that will and have already opened up, which impact our ability to communicate and connect as people of color,” says Senior Campaigns Director Steven Renderos. “But over the last 10 years, our MediaJustice movement has shown the resiliency needed to win against great odds. This diverse network of grassroots leaders remains essential to fighting the ongoing and future battles for economic, racial, and gender justice in a digital age.”
Today’s announcement will be followed by the launch of a refreshed website next month, a series of regional MediaJustice Network events throughout the year, and ongoing celebrations of the organization's 10 year anniversary.
