Green Our Planet Organizes The Nation's Largest Student-Run Farmers Market
Las Vegas, NV (Oct. 23, 2017) – Green Our Planet, in partnership with Switch, University of Nevada Cooperative Extension, Zappos.com and Bank of Nevada, will help create the largest student-run farmers market in the nation on Thursday, November 16 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Zappos Campus in downtown Las Vegas.
The farmers market will feature over 300 students from 32 Clark County elementary, middle and high schools selling their school garden-grown produce and crafts to the community. Proceeds from the market go back to the schools to expand and maintain the schools’ garden programs.
The Outdoor Garden Classroom Program, founded by Green Our Planet in 2013, is a comprehensive learning experience for PreK-12 schools focusing on STEAM, nutrition, financial literacy and conservation education.
Gary Manning, a special education teacher from Coronado High School, says the school garden and farmers market are great tools for students to have a hands-on learning experience.
“At Coronado High School, we have been using our school garden to educate special needs students in nutrition, teamwork and patience, while hopefully preparing them for an agriculture or horticulture-related career. Having our students participate in the farmers market elevates their education by teaching them entrepreneurial and business skills. That’s not something you can teach easily from a textbook,” said Manning.
Green Our Planet organized the first student-run farmers market in Las Vegas at John S. Park Elementary School in 2013. Since then over 100 schools have run over 370 farmers’ markets throughout CCSD schools. Bank of Nevada will provide more than 30 volunteer bankers to assist students at their stalls.
Sponsorship opportunities are still available for this year’s farmers market. For more information contact Mariana Johnson at 702.497.6848 or via email at email@example.com.
