Libbey Designs for Success

Five New Beverageware Patterns Selected by Consumer Research

TOLEDO, OHIO, October 17, 2017 – (NYSE MKT: LBY) The people have spoken, and when it comes to beverageware, they know what they want. Research conducted by Libbey® in August 2017 presented insights into what consumers are looking for when purchasing glassware for the home. The group, consisting of more than 1,300 participants ages 22 to 65 (77 percent female and 23 percent male), market tested 31 glassware designs developed by Libbey. Of those, five emerged as the consumers’ favorites with their trend-driven innovation.

The Eliptic™ pattern featuring swirls and an unconventional shape was the top pick amongst Millennials and a favorite with women. The overall favorite, Trafford™, brings a linear effect for a comfortable feel in the hand. For the men in the group, Stamford™ reigned with its versatile shape, ideal for everything from iced tea to beer. The most polarizing glass of the group, Pembridge™ and its rocky pattern proved strongest with Boomers and Gen Y. The final of the five fan favorites, the Tripoli™ glass was a top choice amongst families with its fun and textured bubble pattern.

The market research also provided information into how consumers are making purchasing choices. Most female shoppers (93 percent) still want to buy glassware in sets. However, only 2 percent of those surveyed want large, 16-piece box sets. Instead, 80 percent of the market prefer small 4-, 6- and 8-piece sets. These smaller sets allow consumers to buy only what they need in a pattern they like.

“This market research provided us with insights into what the consumer really wants when it comes to glassware,” said Greg Pax, director, retail new product development at Libbey Inc. “Not only did we learn what patterns they prefer, we also saw trends in how they choose to purchase these items. This research will continue to inform how Libbey develops new product, from patterns to packaging.”

All five of the chosen beverageware patterns will be available in the first quarter of 2018. To learn more, go to
