The Martial Arts Teachers' Association's Instructor of the Year Award-Tim McCahan

St. Pete Man Named Martial Arts Instructor of the Year

The Martial Arts Teachers' Association has Awarded Tim McCahan the 2017 Instructor of the Year.

The MATA Instructor of the Year award honors an instructor who has exhibited outstanding leadership, innovation, and accomplishments as a martial arts instructor. With his family, Tim McCahan owns Tim McCahan After-School Sports (TMASS) in St. Petersburg, FL.

While many martial arts schools offer after-school programs, TMASS is one of the few that only offer an after-school program. There are no evening classes at TMASS. That was a risk Tim and Debbie McCahan decided they would take in the late 1990s.

Tim had a day job as a carpet cleaner while teaching karate classes at night at their small school. One night Tim polled his students and was surprised to discover that about a dozen attended an after-school program. Tim took the leap and left his day job to create an after-school program that has literally swallowed their school. The program is all they offer today and it's been so successful that others schools around the country are modeling his methods and systems.
