Mock Trial 0 Star Lane Students 1; Students rock Mock Trial Competition

(Casper, Wyo.) - Please rise court is now in session! Or it was for a group of Star Lane students who recently participated in the state Mock Trial competition. The team has been participating for many years and after those years of building a culture and gaining experience it has paid off. The Mock Trial was held in Casper on Jan. 30th and the Natrona County School District is finally in possession of the State Championship Mock Trial trophy courtesy of eight hard working students. According to Star Lane Principal Chad Sharpe, his students have been studying, practicing and learning to think like lawyers since last October. The state championship team consisted of Abbie Schaible, Hunter Hout, Frank Allen, Cameron Summerford, Rick MacKenzie, Gilbert Lucas, Ryan Solomon and Steven Fleming. The Mock Trial competition begins in the fall when a unique case is presented to all schools throughout the state by the Wyoming State Bar Association. The cases are designed to be complex in nature with prepared witness statements and exhibits. Students then analyze materials from different perspectives, learn how to utilize federal rules of evidence, understand the intricacies of courtroom etiquette, develop a theme that can be presented through opening statements, witness examinations, cross examinations, introduction of evidence and closing statements. It is not enough that they do this as a plaintiff or defense team, the competition involves doing trials from both sides, commented Sharpe. Star Lane students were helped tremendously in their preparation this year by local attorneys Thomas Shanor, Katie Koskie and Joe Vlastos. "We are excited that we will finally be sending a Natrona County team to the national competition which will be held in Boise, Idaho in May," said Sharpe.
