Casper Fire Captain Justin Smith confirmed this morning that on Sunday, firefighters were called to the city landfill again to monitor a smoldering fire in a sawdust pile. Smith said firefighters were called to check out the pile after smoke was seen coming from it. Firefighters and city crews poured more sand onto the pile to smother any burning embers. This is the second time in February
the pile started on fire. A similar pile at the landfill was reportedly the
cause of the Cole Creek Fire last year, which destroyed 14 homes.
Smith said this weekend's small fire was not nearly as bad or concerning as
the one that occurred over the Valentine's Day weekend. He said the piles
will continue to be closely monitored.
