STEM program brings hands on learning to 500 Wyoming young ladies

(Laramie, Wyo.) - On Tuesday, 500 plus young ladies took a trip to Laramie and the University of Wyoming for a full day of learning about the real world and careers in the science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). The University of Wyoming hosted twenty-four schools and worked with students between 7th and 12th grade. STEM Program Director Michelle Turner reported that there were twenty-six unique programs the young ladies worked through. "This program adds a huge benefit to our young adults. It exposes them to women working in the sciences in Wyoming and provides some mentors to these young ladies. These students are able to see these women and visualize themselves in the roles they are interested in," said Turner. She continued to report that various groups came to work with the students including the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo (who brought an armadillo, a chinchilla and a porcupine),campus tours, chemistry programs, engineer demos, brain games and the Teton Raptor Club, CSI Wyoming and more. "There were twenty-six different workshops for the kids to participate in and we hope to inspire them to future careers in STEM," said Turner. This is the seventeenth year UW has brought the STEM program to Wyoming students and they hope to continue to program.
