You're Never Too Old For Braces - Dr. Marc Olsen DDS, MSD

Let’s be honest—there are some things in life that just work better when you’re younger. Micro minis, backwards baseball caps, or anything from Abercrombie & Fitch, for example. But when it comes to braces, there’s no age limit.

If you always wish you had a better, healthier smile when you look in the mirror, know that you didn’t miss your chance. In fact, more than one million adults in the U.S. are receiving orthodontic treatment right now, and the numbers continue to climb.

Why are more adults getting braces? The reasons vary. First, a lot of adults are taking better care of themselves overall, including having better dental health, and want the benefits braces provide. For others, it may be that their parents couldn’t afford braces for them, or didn’t put a high priority on orthodontic treatment. Others may even have had braces when they were teens, but need an orthodontic “tune up.”

More Than Straight Teeth
One thing that more people are beginning to realize is that orthodontic care is more than just about having straight teeth. Some of the benefits they provide include:

1. Better dental health. Straight teeth make it easier to brush and floss, which reduces plaque buildup between teeth. Teeth and gums are healthier--and teeth will last longer.

2. Maintaining past dental work. You may be one of countless adults who have had caps, fillings and other restorative work and are getting tired of having to have them replaced. Orthodontic treatment often leads to reduced damage to teeth and dental work, saving money in the long run.

3. Overall health benefits. For those who snore, have sleep apnea or jaw problems, orthodontic treatment can generate huge benefits. Getting braces can change the way the muscles, teeth and tongue are supported in your mouth, opening your airway and helping to resolve problems with your jaw. Another benefit? A well-aligned bite helps us chew food better, aiding in digestion!

4. Improved confidence. Whether you’re 15 or 50, knowing you have a healthy, beautiful smile you can be proud of can make a huge difference in how you feel about yourself. That can translate into being more confident in both your personal and professional lives.

No More Metal Mouth
Just as digital technology has made significant advances in recent years, so has technology for straightening teeth. If you’re worried about having a mouth full of metal, know that options today are smaller, lightweight and easier on the eye. Clear braces are one option, as are products like Invisalign, which make your orthodontic treatments virtually disappear. An added bonus? Newer treatments are less painful and often take less time

—an average of 12 to 20 months for many adults.

So what’s the takeaway? While a variety of today’s fashions are best left to the young (or just left at the store) you’re never too old to have a smile you can be proud of.
