STAR TOO Experimental Theatre Workshops commence on 11 Oct 2014

The new session of STAR TOO experimental theatre workshops commences on October 11, 2014.

STAR TOO, first experimental theatre group in the UAE, give Performance Art Training with a twist.

The STAR TOO arts collective is very excited to announce new COLLABORATIVE PERFORMANCE ART THEATRE workshops focusing on self-expression, bonding skills, and creative thinking. The workshops will be held in partnership with the prestigious Dubai Community Theatre and Arts Centre (DUCTAC) at Mall of the Emirates.

The STAR TOO COLLABORATIVE PERFORMANCE ART THEATRE workshops for adults offer a progressive and multi-disciplinary approach to performance-art training. With a passion for cutting-edge, physical theatre, three specialists will lead classes from October 11th to December 13th at DUCTAC every Saturday 7pm to 9pm.

The STAR TOO teaching force is comprised of French Theatre Professional & Paris-Sorbonne University theatre instructor Sol Abiad, Tunisian director Khawla El Hadef, and Indian classical dancer Shereen Saifudeen. The course takes participants through phases of learning that sparks iconoclasm, reverence, and juxtaposition of the two (a process mimicking the thesis-antithesis-synthesis model.)

While this form can sound esoteric, STAR TOO’s unique COLLABORATIVE PERFORMANCE ART THEATRE is actually a playful, genuine, and holistic approach to learning. We like to push boundaries and shake foundations. With care to transmit what those foundations are, the Workshop covers (kinaesthetically, not just intellectually) ideas that shake history to make a change in the arts, and thus in society.

The workshops are aimed at adults with a passion for acting, movement, music, art, dance and collaborative processes. Open to professionals and amateurs, the workshop promises personalised attention and a syllabus informed by legendary avant-garde directors

Since its inception in 2010, STAR TOO sought out alternative art spaces in Dubai and France, aligned with its philosophy: always breaking new grounds and changing perceptions. Until now, the group operated in the Al Quoz art & industrial zone, likened to the Soho of other capital cities.

With the ability to modulate the playing space, warehouses provided the environment that the growing troupe needed to develop its own style, typically minimalistic, using only foam sticks, plain cloth, and projections to create original stories.

In seven seasons of multi-media creations and arts education, STAR TOO COLLABORATIVE PERFORMANCE ART THEATRE has been staged at venues of prestige for Dubai’s arts scene such as Sheikh Mohammed Centre for Cultural Understanding & Dubai Culture (Sikka Art Fair), The Fridge – Al Serkal Avenue, Traffic Art Gallery, Icon Art Production & the Abu Dhabi Art Hub.

Although we’re big on ideas, we actually run low-key, indie productions, with a focus on original ideas, aesthetic ideals, and being grounded in pure artistic collaboration. Until now, we wouldn’t have thought it possible for a small, counter-cultural, local arts initiative to have the chance to work in one of the most state-of-the-art facilities the city has to offer.

We believe that such a move is made possible thanks to DUCTAC having enlightened leadership at its helm, namely artists and intellectuals. Under the guidance of established artists and curators, the centre is offering something beyond consumerism for the community. The present team works relentlessly to enhance cultural programming and educational outreach. STAR TOO is greatly looking forward to making some magic there this season.

Course booklets will be available to registrants and details about the workshop can be found on the STAR TOO blog:
