Show Dogs Rival to Rule NRG Park — Come, Sit and Stay for the Fun

HOUSTON, TX — Canine competitors will converge on the city, July 20-24, for the 39th annual Houston World Series of Dog Shows at NRG Park. Sponsored by Purina® Dog Food, makers of Purina® Pro Plan® dog food, and hosted by area breed and kennel clubs, the five-day fun family event includes daily conformation competitions among virtually every breed recognized by the American Kennel Club. Seminars and Meet the Breeds events educate visitors on the health, care and temperament of almost 100 dog breeds. In the crating and grooming areas, spectators can observe handlers as they prepare their championship dogs for the show ring. A variety of scheduled events like Frisbee®, flyball, barn hunt, obedience, agility and canine musical freestyle are set to display the extraordinary sporting skills of dogs and equally amazing patience and love of their human handlers. And last but not least, talented stylists really put the bow-WOW in creative grooming contests.

“We are expanding two of the events we added last year because of their popularity,” said event chairman Tom Pincus. “Barn Hunt, which presents an instinct-based challenge in a dog’s natural hunting environment, is an actual trial this year. Two licensed, title-earning trials will be held each day Thursday-Sunday for the Instinct, Novice, Open, Senior and Masters levels. The event schedule includes a basic training Intro Workshop for those who are new to Barn Hunt, as well as workshops for advanced participants and judges.

Also, Creative Dog Grooming, which showcases a stylist’s skill at creating characters and abstract designs through sculpting and coloring techniques, really drew such a crowd that we are moving it into the Performance Ring that offers stadium seating and better visibility.”

Throughout the show, the Dr. Mari Jon Filla Student Art Exhibit will display the delightful dog-inspired works created by Houston-area K-12 grade pupils. Additionally, the C.A.P. Designer Doghouse Competition will showcase some ingenious transformations of the canine’s humble abode. The popular McScotty Market offers shoppers a wide variety of pet-related goods and services from more than 230 commercial vendors and nonprofit organizations including many one-of-a-kind items not available elsewhere.

General show hours are as follows. Wednesday’s partial show, July 20, runs from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. with FREE ADMISSION AND PARKING. This is a perfect day to shop the McScotty Market and enjoy conformation competitions, as performance events do not begin until Thursday.
