Painting Exhibition by George R

As against the predominant culture of excess – of colour, figures, images, details, ornamentations and titillation – George’s paintings veer away into a mode of being that employs extreme minimalism and economy. But it is not only a minimalism of mere protest and counterpoint, but also one that invites the viewer into the rich layeredness of every minutiae of reality – of colours, planes, tones, surfaces and moods… By avoiding figuration in the conventional sense, his works work on textures and patterns, thus gradually drawing us into its intense moodscapes.

Conference in French by Olivier Roy: Head of the Mediterranean Programme, Robert Schuman Centre for Advanced Studies, European University Institute
‘The settlement of Islam, in France is a topical issue and result from a rooted labor migration in the country. While integration was supposed to go together with secularism, the comeback of the religious in all its ways (from salafism to jihadism) raised the issue of the compatibility between Islam and the French society.
Is it a theological problem or just a question of integration of the Muslim religious practices in context of the law of 1905 on the separation between the political power and the religion?
Finally is it an Islam OF France which would be specific or an Islam IN France, which would target only the practices of the believer?’

Olivier Roy was previously a research director at the French National Center for Scientific Research and a lecturer for both the School for Advanced Studies in the Social Sciences and the Institut d'Études Politiques de Paris. From 1984 to 2008, he acted as a consultant to the French Foreign Ministry. Roy is the author of numerous books on subjects including Iran, Islam, Asian politics. His best-known book, L'Echec de l'Islam politique (The Failure of Political Islam), is a standard text for students of political Islam.
