New York, NY― Broadway Dance Center (BDC) will host the first-ever “Day of Dance,” with performer and author Matthew Shaffer at the BDC studios on March 29, 2015 to launch his fabulous tell all and inspirational book So You Want to Be a Dancer . The event will be part of BDC’s “Industry Insider” series, which puts dancers in direct contact with industry professionals and cutting-edge concepts. Shaffer said BDC is the perfect venue for his book launch, as the global dance epicenter was his “home away from home” in NYC, spending time between shows and rehearsing after hours with greats such as Tracie Stanfield and Andy Blankenbuehler.
Shaffer chose this event to launch his much-awaited book, So You Want to Be a Dancer (Taylor Trade, March 2015, 978-1-6306-0267, Cloth, $19.95) a first of its kind for aspiring and professional performers alike, who are determined to continue pursuing a career doing what they love: dance.
“Broadway Dance Center is where I began collaborating with other artists, building bonds, cultivating connections and developing the lifelong friendships that have helped me succeed in New York City and beyond,” said Shaffer. “Regardless of where you’re from globally, as a dancer, you know that Broadway Dance Center is your first stop in New York City. I’m honored and #JAZZed to share my book with the community that continues to inspire me."
"Matthew Shaffer has written the kind of book I wish I would have had available to me as a young dancer. This is a great guide for young dancers and parents alike to understand the many different aspects of this crazy world we call show business. If you are a dancer wanting to know more, I recommend you read this book!" -Mandy Moore, Two-time Emmy Award nominated choreographer for So You Think You Can Dance
Broadway Dance Center Public Relations Director April Cook said, “We’re thrilled to host the Industry Insider event to celebrate Matthew’s new book. He has been a wonderful part of our dance community, and a positive voice at BDC for more than a decade. He has an incredible amount of information to offer young dancers seeking a professional career, and his experience is an invaluable resource.”
The event includes an industry audition led by Shaffer for a panel of distinguished dance professionals including choreographers, instructors, agents, and working dancers, many of whom appear in his book. Additionally, members of the Radio City Rockettes® will make a special appearance. Participating dancers will receive individualized feedback from Shaffer and the panel, and afterward, the floor will open for discussion.
The public is invited to join the dancers afterward to hear excerpts from the book read by the author, participate in the Q & A session with Shaffer and the panel, and stay for the book signing. A copy of “So You Want to Be a Dancer” is included in the class price, and will also be available for purchase on-site.
