Robots Offer Prescribed Care for (Mostly) Independent Seniors

Seniors and doctors are beginning to rely on the assistance of robots to simplify the complexities of in-home care for senior citizens. According to a study completed by students at Worcester Polytechnic Institute, the elderly account for more than a third of annual U.S. personal care expenditures while only making up about 13 percent of the population. As such, researching new and improved ways to provide in-home care services to senior citizens helps reduce costs by helping doctors give quality treatments to the elderly. However robotic technologies—while potentially revolutionizing home care—have limitations that can only be fulfilled by human personnel.

Services Robots Provide At Home

Rather than having to organize ways to get to a doctor’s office or hospital for prescribed care, certain robot models can live stream with doctors, allowing the individual to receive care from home. Additionally, robots help the elderly by measuring out precise doses of medication at regular intervals so that the correct dosage can be taken on time, every time. This convenience ensures that seniors are being taken care of medically, without the costly shortcomings associated with medical personnel. In this way, elderly care is streamlined and cost effective compared to current alternatives.

Challenges Associated with Robotic Care

Although robots can provide precision and convenience for seniors, there are still a number of aspects related to the daily life of a senior citizen that must be taken into account. Robots cannot provide vital human contact , which is extremely important during everyday life and when recovering from illness or injury. Robots also create a scenario that makes a person feel that they are cut off from the outside world and that they have lost their individuality and personal liberties.

The Importance of Human In-Home Care

While robots help take guesswork out of medical care for home bound senior citizens, human interaction and non-medical in-home care is still very important. In-home care helps keep families together without having to send a loved one to a facility or hospital unnecessarily. It is also a highly personalized approach that promotes healing and independence for the elderly so that the focus can remain on recovery.
