Dance Academy Offering San Diego's First Spanish-language Irish Dance Classes

Neisha's Dance and Music Academy in Chula Vista announced on St. Patrick's Day they will be hosting a free introductory Irish dance session on April 17, 2015, and then monthly bilingual clinics. Led by Yovanna Torres, an award-winning Irish Dance instructor from Guadalajara, the goal is to take advantage of the increasing popularity of Irish dance and are believed to be the first bilingual - English and Spanish - Irish dance classes offered in San Diego.

Located in the heart of Eastlake, Chula Vista, Neisha’s Dance & Music Academy (ND&MA) has over 1,000 students of all ages learning ballet, tap, jazz, hip hop, contemporary, lyrical, pilates, Latin rhythms, popping and waving, parent/toddler, musical theater, acting, and more. ND&MA is also the home of Chula Vista Ballet and Club NDA Hip Hop, Contemporary and Mini Teams. Irish dancing is the newest class. Irish dance is their newest class offering.

Neisha Hernandez, Owner/Director of the dance and music academy, says that while many of her staff and instructors are bilingual, this will be the first time the school has offered Irish dance in Spanish. "Many Mexicans and Mexican-Americans know the legend of the San Patricios, the Irish who fought for Mexico. Their love of Irish culture is deep. Yovanna Torres is well-respected as both a top dancer and an amazing instructor. We expect a very strong demand for these classes," states Hernandez.

Torres owns and operates two Irish dance schools in Mexico, one in Guadalajara, where she lives, and the other in Tijuana which she visits monthly. She noted that some of her students cross the border south from San Diego to Tijuana to start Irish dance and, later, to prepare for Irish dance competitions. Over the past three years, the Irish Dancers of Mexico have been dancing at San Diego's annual St. Patrick's Day Parade and Festival and have built a fan base. "So many approach me who want to learn Irish dance. Neisha and I thought it was important to make them available in both languages."

In honor of St. Patrick's Day, Torres and one of her students performed at Chula Vista Mayor Mary Salas' State of the City address. Mayor Salas wanted to include Irish music and dance scheduled for St. Patrick's Day and knew the Irish Dancers de Mexico's steller reputation.
