SALT LAKE CITY (May 5, 2014) – The Grand America Hotel, Salt Lake City’s only AAA Five Diamond hotel, is partnering with The Road Home, a social service agency that operates the state’s largest homeless shelter, to help local individuals and families in need for the remainder of the year.
The partnership kicked off on April 29 with The Grand America Hotel leadership team serving over 250 individuals of the family and women’s shelters. Beginning this month, the hotel will organize hygiene kits by collecting unused shampoos and soaps from hotel guest rooms, as well as donate leftover food from banquets and linens that have been moved out of the hotel’s guest circulation. Hotel staff and volunteers will deliver these to The Road Home.
“As a notable hotel, The Grand America focuses a great deal of their time and effort on the well-being of out-of-town travelers and local visitors,” said Matt Minkevitch, executive director at The Road Home, “but through my work with them, I’ve seen firsthand that they are committed to serving the local Salt Lake City community as well. Together we can give more people the help they need to move out of homelessness and back into the community.”
During the holiday season, the hotel will expand its donation efforts by organizing a donation drive tied with its must-see holiday windows for clothes, toys and household items for the Candy Cane Corner holiday store. Candy Cane Corner, a partnership between The Road Home, YWCA Utah and Volunteers of America of Utah, enables low-income individuals and families participating in the three agencies’ programs to celebrate the holidays with new gifts. Parents visit the store with their case managers and select gifts for their families from among the items donated by local businesses and individuals.
The Grand America will also provide volunteer opportunities for staff throughout the year, such as giving manicures to Palmer Court residents, cutting children’s hair before the new school year starts and organizing holiday donations for Candy Cane Corner, to fully engage the hotel and staff with giving back to the community through The Road Home partnership.
