Find Your New Best Friend at Meet the Breeds

HOUSTON, TEXAS (June 11, 2014) — The best place to get reliable information on more than 110 breeds of dogs is at the Houston World Series of Dog Shows’ Meet the Breeds. At this special event, new and potential dog owners can get helpful information on breeds that interest them. Meet the Breeds, taking place on Friday, July 18 through Sunday, July 20, offers attendees the opportunity to watch and learn from knowledgeable breeders and experts.

Meet the Breeds is a hands-on experience that focuses on teaching pet owners about the needs of purebred dogs. The event also offers potential owners the chance to interact with each breed and learn the positive/negative aspects of owning each one.  In one 60 minute session, spectators can interact with as many as eight different dog breeds. However, AKC rules prohibit the sale of dogs at the show itself.

These one-on-one interactions provide a chance for spectators to understand what owning a certain breed would entail. The information gained from this experience will benefit not only the new owner in caring for a new furry friend, but it will also provide a smooth transition for the dog. The importance of understanding the different characteristics of each breed is crucial to ensuring a good fit and reducing the number of dogs surrendered to shelters each year.

Carol Williamson, coordinator for Meet the Breeds, says, “There is no better way for potential dog owners to learn what will be expected of them as new dog parents. Both the lifestyle of the owner and the habits of the dog must be considered to create a happy home for the whole family, new dog included!”

The schedule for Meet the Breeds will be announced closer to show dates. Each breed will have only one showcase, so visitors must plan accordingly.
